Is Occupy Melbourne still happening?

It has been a LONG time since the Occupy Melbourne movement began on October 15, 2011, and nearly all Melbourne citizens who do not travel into town have forgotten about it.

Even though the numbers have dropped dramatically,  It is still happening, as there are still a small group of very keen “supporters” lurking in Melbourne refusing to go home.

According to the The Herald Sun, Father Bob Maguire of the Catholic Church has called for their eviction.

‘he gave the group – whose numbers have dropped dramatically – space to set up camp as “individuals, not as Occupy Melbourne”.’

According to The Herald Sun article, there are still approximately 12 tents set up at the back of the church.

There is speculation as to where there will be another controversial and media-stuffed “eviction even.t”

Maybe it’s time for the activist group to pack up their belongings, cut their losses, and go home.

Occupy Melbourne numbers dropping

As the Occupy Melbourne group has set up camp “indefinitely” at the Treasury Gardens, the scale of people has also dropped dramatically.

What was thought to be 1,300+ protesters at the original October 15 protest, has now been reduced to approximately 60.

They have littered the lawns with makeshift beds, tarps, and some people are claiming they are going to “kill the wildlife” in the area. A lot of people have lost patience with the protests, and the City Council claims they have suffered over $75,000 in damages from the incidents.
